METIER3
In February 2009, Black Saturday was a devastating blow for Marysville and its people destroying 90 percent of the town’s building stock and leaving a main street riddled with empty lots. METIER3 approached this tragedy as an opportunity to rebuild a substantial part of the local character lost and to envision new amenities that respond to long standing public desire. In partnership with TFE Hotels (operators of the hotel), and in conjunction with the State of Victoria, a significant element of the bushfire response was created.
We set out to re-establish the charm of an eclectic alpine village, by creating a fine-grained urban design response to enhance and rebuild the street. By taking cues from the local built character, materiality and rhythm of the streetscapes, the design’s visual and performative qualities are strengthened.
Construction was completed in early 2015, and the Hotel and Conference centre is the centrepiece of the town and surrounding shire.
